A selection of films presented and awarded at major world festivals such as Locarno, Karlovy Vary, Cannes, Toronto, Torino, etc. is announced in the competition. The jury consists of Maria Drăguş – currently actress in Germany, known for her roles in films such as The White Ribbon (dir. Michael Haneke) or Graduation (dir. Cristian Mungiu) -, Vlad Ivanov – 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days (dir. Cristian Mungiu), Snowpiercer (dir. Bong Joon-ho), One Step Behind the Seraphim (dir. Daniel Sandu), La Gomera (dir. Corneliu Porumboiu) -, and Mălina Manovici – Graduation (dir. Cristian Mungiu), Lemonade (dir. Ioana Uricaru).

This year’s special guest is the famous Serbian filmmaker and one of the initiators of the “docudrama” genre, Želimir Žilnik. A retrospective of his films will be presented at Ceau, Cinema!, organized in collaboration with Art Encounters Biennial 2019. The retrospective will include films such as Early Works, Kenedi Goes Back Home, Logbook_Serbistan.

There will also be a retrospective of the New German Cinema, presenting films from the 60s-80s. Thus, viewers will have the chance to watch films made by Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The theme of this year’s edition is the noir film.

Four portrait documentaries made by female directors will be screened within the section called DOC-minica. Three of the filmmakers turn their attention to their family. Stanca Radu, granddaughter of Stela Popescu, presents the artist’s life in her documentary Popeasca, Mila Turajlić speaks of her mother in The Other Side of Everything, and Timebox, Nora Agapi‘s film, who will also be present at the screening, focuses on Ioan Matei Agapi, photographer, documentary director and Nora’s father.

The fourth film, The Waldheim Waltz, by Ruth Beckerman, looks at how former UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim’s actions during the war have been unveiled by the World Jewish Congress.

The traditional section Films from Banat within Ceau, Cinema! focuses this year on Dobrivoie Kerpenisan and his documentaries on post-communism life in a common Banat region, and one of the locals’ journey in America. The director is a special guest of the festival.

Ceau, Junior! is a section dedicated to children where they can watch animations, short and feature films, and participate at Ludoteca Habarnam, a playground and reading club for children between 0 an 10 years old.

Besides screenings, the public is invited to attend the Ceau, Cineva! Film Workshop, where guests Alina Grigore (actress Illegitimate, Best Intentions) and Robi Urs (actor Illegitimate, So Bright Is the View) will introduce the basis for film acting, and share the essential things to know about a casting. Ceau, Cinema! will take place in Timişoara and Gottlob, between July 18th-21st, 2019, at Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre, Hall 2 – Mihai Eminescu National Theater, Ambasada, House of Arts, Capitol Summer Theatre, Banatul State Philharmonic Orchestra, Gottlob Cinema.
