Films for the weekend: #stayhome recommendations for March 27-29 (2020)
If two weeks ago I recommended movies that could still be watched in cinemas, from now on we limit ourselves to everything we can watch at home, online or on TV. Because I hope you all will be at home during this period.
As usual, I come with six movie recommendations for all tastes and preferences. Because, as I used to say once – life is hard and complicated, but fortunately people have invented stories to make it easier to bear. Of course, films fall into this category. And in times like these, this statement cannot be more true.
This time we divide the recommendations between movies that can be watched online and movies that can be watched on TV, sitting on the couch, with the whole family.
WATCHING ONLINE:
– Bucharest Non-Stop (dir. Dan Chișu; drama, comedy) – A regular night at a 24/7 neighborhood store. Achim, the owner, represents the connection between four stories of ordinary people caught in extraordinary situations. No matter how different they are, the taxi driver and the hooker, the elderly couple, the lovers and the local gangsters have one thing in common: Achim’s nonstop store.
The movie can be watched online anytime on Cinepub, right here.
– Foxtrot (dir. Samuel Maoz; drama) – Michael and Dafna Feldmann are devastated when army officials show up at their home to announce the death of their son, Jonathan. Michael spirals into a whirlwind of anger only to experience one of life’s unfathomable twists, which rivals the surreal military experiences of his son.
The movie can be watched on TIFF Unlimited here. You can subscribe on the platform and have a 14-day free trial.
– On Body and Soul (dir. Ildikó Enyedi; drama) – an atypical love story, between two introverts who discover, by chance, that they have the same dream every night. Endre is the financial director of a slaughterhouse where Maria is transferred to handle the quality control. An internal incident leads Endre to bring in a psychologist to interview the employees. This way, they find out that each night they dream of the same dream.
Bad Unicorn distribution house offers 8 titles in their portfolio that can be watched online on Vimeo VoD platform (including On Body and Soul), here. The cost of an online ticket is $3, and the user can watch the movie within three days.
WATCHING ON TV:
– The Grand Budapest Hotel (dir. Wes Anderson; comedy) – The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.
The movie can be watched on TV on Friday, March 27 at 1pm on HBO 3. May I also say that it’s one of my favorite movies?
– Her (dir. Spike Jonze; drama) – Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, “her” follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user.
Her runs on HBO 2 on Friday, March 27 from 3:45 pm.
– American Beauty (dir. Sam Mendes; drama) – A black tragedy-comedy, an ultra-modern Lolita that became a cult movie overnight. A mass hysteria, a revolution in the cinema and … a magnificent crisis of identity. American Beauty is the story of Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), a middle-aged man who develops a dangerous and unhealthy passion for an appetizing teenager, his daughter’s best friend. In short – a classic. The movie can be watched on CineMAX on Saturday, March 28 from 7:00 am – for morning people only.
