Movies for the Weekend – Recommendations for November 8-10 (2019)

8 November, 2019

The weather has warmed up a bit, so I take the opportunity and try one more time to get you out of the house this weekend to go watch a good movie. I’ve prepared 4 recommendations of films that can be watched at the cinema, to suit all tastes (in my opinion) – in case you are planning to leave the house this weekend (soon it’s going to get cold again, so don’t miss this chance). But if not, no worries; we also have 3 movies that can be watched at home, online or on TV.

TO BE WATCHED IN CINEMAS:

Queen Marie of Romania (dir. Alexis Sweet Cahill; drama) – A film with an entire history, a story based on real events that centers on the remarkable figure of Queen Marie. Devastated by the First World War, consumed by disease, held captive by hunger and despair, the political fate of Romania is extremely controversial.

The movie can be watched throughout this weekend at Grand Cinema & More and Happy Cinema Liberty Mall. The program and tickets can be found here.

Cărturan (dir. Liviu Sandulescu; drama) – An elderly man called Cărturan lives a quiet life in a mountain village with his twelve-year-old grandson, whom he has raised on his own since the boy was little. A visit to the doctor brings dire, unexpected news: due to a serious illness he will not live for much longer.

Cărturan can be watched in premiere on November 8th at Cinema City Cotroceni, Cinema City Mega Mall and Europa Cinema.

Dolor y gloria (dir. Pedro Almodóvar; drama) – The film narrates a series of re-encounters of Salvador Mallo, a film director in his decline. Some of these re-encounters play out in real time, others are recalled through flashbacks: his childhood in the 1960s, the first sexual desire, his first adult love in Madrid, the pain of the breakup of this relationship, writing as a therapy to forget. By the way, Antonio Banderas won the Cannes Award for Best Actor in 2019 for his role in Pain and Glory.

Almodóvar’s latest film screens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in several cinemas such as Hollywood Multiplex, Union Cinema and Cinema City Cotroceni.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (dir. Joachim Rønning; fantasy) – If you liked the first Maleficent, then you are definitely excited about this sequel featuring Angelina Jolie in the lead role. Maleficent 2 will further explore the complex relationship between the scary horned character and the one to become the Queen. New alliances are formed and new antagonists appear in the fight for the protection of the Moors kingdom.

Maleficent 2 is still running in theaters and can be watched throughout this weekend in multiple locations. The program and tickets can be found here.

Here are 3 (three) fun facts I want to share with you:

  1. The film was released on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast, the 1959 Disney animation.
  2. The film’s cast includes one Oscar winner: Angelina Jolie; and four Oscar nominees: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
  3. This is the fourth time that Michelle Pfeiffer played a villain.

FEELING LAZY? HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN WATCH AT HOME:

Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time (dir. Stere Gulea; drama) – 8 awards and 5 nominations at the GOPO Awards in 2019, the film continues the tale of Ilie Moromete and his family, this time focusing on his youngest son, Niculae. The entire world order of the village, where the most important thing is to own land and live as a peasant, changes with the Communist regime and their collectivization.

Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time can be watched on TV on Saturday, November 9th, on HBO 3, from 12:35 pm.

Of Snails and Men (dir. Tudor Giurgiu; comedy) – If you’re in the mood for some comedy on Sunday night, you already know what to do. In a small town, the state-owned car factory went bankrupt and is about to be privatized within a week. It will be bought by a French company that intends to convert it into a snail cannery. Of the 3000 workers, only 300 will keep their jobs. George Petrescu sees a commercial on TV about a sperm bank that pays $50 for each donation. Out of desperation, he comes with the most original solution for saving the factory and the jobs of his colleagues.

Sounds promising, doesn’t it? Of Snails and Men can be watched on FilmBox Arthouse on Sunday, November 10th, starting at 9:00 pm.

Have you missed it? No problem, you can see it on Cinepub anytime, here.

Outbound (dir. Bogdan George Apetri; drama) – Matilda is released from prison for 24 hours and plans to flee the country and to start a new life. By the end of the day she has to confront her painful past: the family that rejected her, her former boyfriend and the child that she left behind. The fight for a better life reminds her that freedom can hang on only one choice.

The film, with Ana Ularu in the leading role, was screened in multiple festivals and won important awards, and we can watch it for free anytime on Cinepub, here.
