Movies for the Weekend – Recommendations for December 6-8 (2019)
December has begun with cold and chilly days, but that doesn’t mean we can’t go out (although it’s so warm and nice inside!). As usual, I try to offer some film-related reasons to get out of our “nest”, and this weekend we have 3 movies to watch at the cinema and 3 to watch at home, on TV, with a hot chocolate mug in our hands:
TO BE WATCHED IN CINEMAS:
– Timebox (dir. Nora Agapi; documentary) – Professor Ioan-Matei Agapi, an 80-year-old photographer and cameraman from Iași, Romania, owns a unique collection of 16mm films and photographs documenting almost fifty years of the city’s history. His daughter, also a filmmaker, has decided to make a film about her father’s archives. In the unconventional surroundings of his old apartment, he reminisces about the past until one day, Ioan is informed that he must leave or be evicted from the apartment where he has spent the past 40 years.
For more details on Timebox, I recommend the exclusive material for Films in Frame – Time Crystals. An interview with Nora Agapi, about Timebox.
The film can be watched in premiere on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at several cinemas in Bucharest, such as Union Cinema, Peasant Museum Cinema and Elvire Popesco Cinema.
– Queen Marie of Romania (dir. Alexis Sweet Cahill; drama) – A film with an entire history, a story based on real events that centers on the remarkable figure of Queen Marie. Devastated by the First World War, consumed by disease, held captive by hunger and despair, the political fate of Romania is extremely controversial. In the spring of 1919, Queen Marie goes to Paris to lobby for its great unification’s international recognition at the Peace Talks.
The movie can be watched throughout this weekend in multiple cinemas.
– The Lighthouse (dir. Robert Eggers; horror) – The Lighthouse is a black and white film and the action takes place on an island in New England in 1890, where two lighthouse keepers, Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and Ephraim Winslow ( Robert Pattinson) lose their minds in isolation.
The Lighthouse is screening Saturday, at Elvire Popesco Cinema, from 8:30 pm.
FEELING LAZY? HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN WATCH AT HOME:
– Lemonade (dir. Ioana Uricariu; drama) – Mara, a 30-year-old single mother, marries Daniel (an American) while in the United States with a temporary nurse job. When her journey to get the Green Card takes an unexpected turn, Mara is forced to face an unpleasant truth.
The movie can be watched on Cinemax 2 and Cinemax 2 HD on Friday (from 8:00 pm) and on Saturday (from 10:25 am).
You can read more about Lemonade in my #BehindTheScreen feature with Ioana Uricaru, here.
– Being Romanian – A Family Journal (dir. Serban Georgescu; documentary) – A film about how language, nationality, religion, local cuisine, sports, politics, war, agriculture, construction sites, traditions, music or fashion have influenced and shaped our family. A journey through space and time, where family bridges the gap between every moment that has united us or torn us apart since the Great Union until today.
The film airs on TV on Saturday, December 7, from 1:00 pm on TVR1.
– Breaking News (r. Iulia Rugina; drama) – Breaking News (directed by Iulia Rugină; Drama) – After the tragic death of his cameraman, reporter Alex Mazilu makes an in memoriam piece on his life. Three days before Christmas, in a small town on the Black Sea coast, Alex puts together the puzzle of his existence, all seen through the eyes of his self-willed teenage daughter. In an attempt to compensate for the death of his former colleague, Alex takes his place imperceptibly.
The movie can be watched on Sunday, December 8, at 10:15 pm on Pro Cinema.
