The last weekend of October is almost here and brings us three premieres in the movie theatres and a lot of films to watch at home.

1. You’ve probably already found out that the film Caps (dir. Sorin Marin, drama) will have its premiere on Friday, October 27. Caps is the story of a rich and powerful, but single man who manages his business with authority and no scruples. His competition attacks him on the stock market, which prompts the man to remember a childhood game of beer bottle caps. A heart attack and the news that he might need a heart transplant determine him to head to a remote place, where the Danube river meets the sea, a place of simple people and old customs.

The film’s casting features, among others, Vlad Ivanov and Adrian Titieni and can be seen for the first time on Friday, October 27, at Grand Cinema & More (starting at 4:05 PM) and Romanian Peasant Museum Cinema (at 8:30 PM). Don’t worry if you cannot catch the premiere. The film will also be screened on Saturday and Sunday. More details here.

2. Que Dios nos perdone/May God save us (dir. Rodrigo Sorogoyen, thriller). The second film premiere which will happen on Friday is the thriller Que Dios nos perdone. The movie’s action is set in Madrid in 2011. One and a half million pilgrims are waiting for the Pope’s visit. The city is carefully supervised by the cops who are scared of a terrorist attack. Inspectors Velarde and Alfaro must find what appears to be a serial killer. They have to resolve the case as quickly and discreetly as possible, but their actions are not so different from the killer’s.

Que Dios nos perdone will be screened this weekend at Grand Cinema & More, Happy Cinema Liberty Mall and Romanian Peasant Museum Cinema. Find more details here.

3. You have certainly found out that Saw series returns on the big screen this weekend with Jigsaw (dir. Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig; horror). A decade after the death of the sadistic killer Jigsaw, several bodies are turning up around the city. All have something in common: a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one suspect: John Kramer. But how is this possible if Jigsaw is dead for more than a decade?

Surely, we could not miss the fun facts about one of the most famous horror films, right?

• The script was finished in February 2016.
• This is the first “Saw” movie with two directors.
• The film takes place more than 10 years after the action of Saw III (2006), the movie that features the death of Jigsaw.
• A soft reference to Jigsaw (2017) appeared in the movie Insidious (2010). It was a drawing of the clown puppet with the number “8” beneath it.

The possibilities are countless for those who prefer spending the weekend at home. Here are three recommendations:

1. The famous Maleficent (dir. Robert Stromberg; fantastic), which casts Angelina Jolie can be watched this weekend on TV. The beautiful and young Maleficent has an idyllic life, growing up in a peaceful forest kingdom, dreaming of becoming a powerful pure-hearted goddess. Until one day when an invading army attacks her peers and she suffers a ruthless betrayal that turns her heart to stone.

Fun facts:

• The film was released on May 30, 2014, the day of the 55th anniversary of Walt Disney’s classic Sleeping Beauty (1959).
• Angelina Jolie admitted that she scared little children while she was wearing the costume of Maleficent on set. Her daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, who played young Aurora, was the only child who was not scared of her.
• Angelina Jolie created her character’s speech and accent in homage of the original Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent voice, actor Eleanor Audley. Her laughter in the film was the best variation she tried in front of her children and it was chosen by them.
• Angelina Jolie admitted that she still has the pair of horns at home.

2. The Blind Side (dir. John Lee Hancock, drama). The film tells the story of Michael Oher, an African-American teenager from Memphis, who is overweight and illiterate. He comes from a family of 13 children and grew up with a drug addict mother and without a father, who was killed. He ran away from all the 6 adoptive families to live a dangerous and difficult life on the streets. His faith changes when he is adopted by Leigh Anne and Sean Touhy.

The film will be on TV on Saturday, October 28, at 9:45 PM, and on Sunday, starting at 5:35 PM on Cool TV.

3. Toni Erdmann (dir. Maren Ade; comedy, drama) returns on TV this weekend. The film won five European Film Academy awards in 2016 and Maren Ade received the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes 2016 for it. Briefly, the film presents Peter Simonischek, a father who comes in Bucharest for his daughter (Sandra Huller) to teach her about the sense of humour.

Toni Erdmann can be seen on Sunday, October 29, on CineMAX and CineMAX HD, at 6:20 PM.
