The 9th edition of Timishort Film Festival

9 October, 2017

The 9th edition of Timishort includes over 80 short films, eight sections, workshops, exhibitions, debates, concerts and special screenings.

‘Timishort Film Festival was born, like many good ideas, over a coffee in 2009. Timișoara has 340.000 inhabitants. We considered that they need films with actual content, that they, themselves can discuss afterwards, over a cup of coffee. Short films are the basis of any film theory, and let’s face it, the most digestible ones. Author films (film d’auteur) have been promoted by the festival team from the very beginning, putting an emphasis on national and/or international premiers. The Timishort FF competitions are:

  • National Competition
  • International Competition
  • Videorama (our experimental film section)

We also have a great number of non-competitive sections and other related events, to appeal to a more varied audience.

Our main goal was to bring back the magic of watching a film on the big screen. We have proudly managed to grow the audience numbers each year. Timishort International Film Festival is the meeting point for film authors, industry professionals and the public.’

The 9th edition of the most important short film festival in western Romania will take place this year between 12th and 15th of October in Timișoara. For four days, the locals can see over 80 short films divided in eight sections, four of which are competitions: international competition, national competition, an experimental film section called Videorama and a competition of short films dedicated to children (Timikids).

The opening event will be on October 12 at Cinema Timiș. This year, for the first time, Timishort will start with a series of internationally successful short films suitable to all audiences: both lovers of the genre and those less likely to see short films in the cinema.

The international competition brings to Timișoara 20 short films from 20 different countries, most of them for the first time in Romania. The films will captivate the interest of the audience.

The national competition includes 12 short films.

For Timishort we chose several Romanian short films which will debunk the general myth of the Romanian film: sadness, misery, long or boring sequences. The films that we bring this year to Timishort are created for the audience and not for festivals. We have a series which includes only comedy short films and another one with romance, horror, experimental and others’ – Massimiliano Nardulli.

The award for Best Romanian Short Film is offered by the Romanian Cultural Institute and amounts to 1.000 EUR.

The Videorama section will have six short films this year, both experimental film and video art that are far less promoted in Romania. This way, the audience will have the chance to find out more about talented video artists. Telling the story through unconventional means was the main selection criterion for this competition.

This year’s edition of Timishort also brings 14 short films for children in Timikids section.

The jury of the 9th edition of the festival is formed of: Maja Šuša, artistic director of ‘Bašta fest’ (Serbia), Shai Levy, DOP (Germany), Ana Maria Pîrvan, producer (Romania), Seán Breathnach, director (Ireland) and Flavia Dima, film critic (Romania).

The 9th edition of Timishort will take place this year between 12th and 15th of October at Timiș Cinema and House of Arts.
