On Monday, November 25, at POINT Hub we will meet two of the people who outline the course of the contemporary Romanian documentary film: Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and Alexandru Solomon.

ADFR invites you to discover the secrets of the documentary film, one of the most challenging genres in cinema, at Masterclass #8: Doc_Talk where filmmakers Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and Alexandru Solomon will discuss some key points that will lead to a better understanding of the process of making a documentary film:

– How do you choose your subject?

– What is the script for a documentary film?

– Directing in documentary film;

– Editing in documentary film;

– The director’s relationship with the protagonist (s) of the film.

As always, the masterclass will be followed by a Q&A session.

 

Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan is a film producer and director with over 10 years experience in international co-productions. Among the films she produced, co-produced or was a delegate producer for, are: The Cage (dir. Adrian Sitaru; with over 20 awards in festivals, including Berlinale 2010), Domestic (dir. Adrian Sitaru, 2012), Chuck Norris Vs. Communism (dir. Ilinca Călugăreanu, 2015, selected at Sundance IFF, distributed in many areas, including on Netflix), Touch Me Not (dir. Adina Pintilie; Golden Bear – Berlinale 2018), Timebox (dir. Nora Agapi, the award for best film in the “Between the Seas” section in 2018, as well as five other international awards).

She has also directed documentary films such as A Mere Breath (Heart of Sarajevo Award for best documentary film in 2016, Gopo Award for best Romanian documentary film in 2017, and four other international awards), My Vote (2011, Jury Prize at Sarajevo IFF 2012) and Free Dacians (2018), together with Andrei Gorgan.

Director and film producer, cinematographer and screenwriter, Alexandru Solomon graduated from IATC, the Film Image section, in 1991, and was among the first filmmakers to dedicate themselves to documentary cinema, a compromised genre at that time. Member of EDN (European Documentary Network). President of One World Romania association. He is one of the most known professionals in the documentary field; his filmography includes titles such as Great Communist Bank Robbery (2004), Cold Waves (2007), Kapitalism – Our Improved Formula (2010), Romania: Four Countries (2015) and Tarzan’s Testicles (2017). He has been involved in several international documentary film co-productions broadcast by BBC, Channel 4, Arts and CBC. He teaches at the University of Arts in Bucharest and, in 2016, published the monograph Representations of Memory in Documentary Film.

Participation is free and the masterclass is mainly dedicated to students. Should there be any seats left, the masterclass is also open to those who are already working in the film industry and for whom the class subject is of interest and useful in their practice, or to the film enthusiasts who want to discover the world behind the screen and improve their knowledge on cinema.
